By Yong Qiu

In January 2008, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) announced a vast programme that will see the construction of 97 new airports and the expansion and modernisation of 144 existing facilities by 2020. Construction work is underway and already US$20bn of financing is needed by 2010, with a further US$44bn by 2020 if the programme is to stay on schedule.
